Washing in cold water
To wash your laundry in cold water, use your SoapNuts to make soapnut soak. Then add 1/4 to 1/2 cup (depending on how soiled the load is) directly in the washing machine. For really heavily soiled laundry, more can be safely used.
What should be the wash water temperature?
Saponin (the natural soap compound in soapnuts) is best released in higher temperature water. Therefore, we recommend using warm (or hot) water to wash your laundry. To wash your laundry with cold water, just whip up a batch of Soapnut Soak, and use it in place of commercial detergents.
Do I need to use softener with soapnuts?
No. Soapnuts actually leave your laundry soft without the use of fabric softener.
Will there be any unpleasant smell in the clothes after washing?
You can add 5-10 drops of your favorite essential oil directly on the cotton wash bag before you put it in the wash. Another way to add scent is to add a few drops of essential oil to a scrap piece of fabric and put it in the dryer with your clean laundry.
Can I leave the wash bag in the washer during the rinse cycle?
Yes! Hot water causes the soapnuts to release their saponin, but cold water has little, if any, effect on them. So the saponin is released during the wash cycle, and is washed away during the cold water rinse.
